12. Inspired Music Videos

My first music video is the video for Sabotage by the Beastie Boys. I really like the cheesy 80s cop show theme in the video. I also like how they are wearing obviously fake wigs and moustaches with the signature aviators. The camera movement they use is very referential to that of the cop shows but they do it in a jokey way because they are falling over and running into each other.

The other video is “This is America” by Childish Gambino. I have liked Childish Gambino’s songs for a while but the first one that really stood out was “Redbone” which was in Get Out (2017) which was the biggest movie of the year and he won on Emmy for best R&B song. I am subscribed to Childish Gambino on youtube so when he uploaded the video I was one of the first few thousand who saw it. Today it now has nearly 60 million views in 5 days and was NO. 1 on trending on YouTube. The video is mostly one shot but there are a few takes. The weekend in which he dropped the music video he was at a few conferences for the new Star Wars movie Solo and he also hosted SNL.

The video starts of with a man playing a guitar on a chair in a warehouse and then the camera moves over to Donald who is shirtless and doing dances to distract us from the atrocities in the video. The video also shows guns are more important than people because he effortlessly shoots people and then the gun are taken away on a small piece of cloth. It also has signs of police brutality for example there are police cars, men riding on horses which is probably the riot police and also rioters.

On another note SZA makes an appearance in the video sitting on one of the cars. Also at the end of the video Donald is running away from a mob of white people and he is acting incredibly well because you can tell his fear in his eyes from it.

The video uses mostly one-shot scenes but there are a few cuts. I think this is what I may use because I want to combine long takes and few fast cuts. The video is very simple in its transitions and they do not use very many intricate cuts. The cuts when they are there are swipe cuts where the camera moves to one side in a blurring motion and the cuts is disguised.
